What Makes These Christmas Brownies Easy To Make?

For starters, this recipe uses the Epic Double Choc Brownie Mix, which does all the heavy lifting on the ingredient front. No weighing, no faffing, no last-minute supermarket dash for cocoa powder. Simply tip the mix into a bowl, add melted butter and eggs, and you’ve got a double chocolate brownie batter ready in minutes. They bake quickly too, which means you can spend less time making the brownies and more time on the fun bit: turning them into your cute, festive Christmas designs. And if piping buttercream feels like more effort than you fancy (or you’re baking with little helpers), you can simply spread the buttercream on top instead. Or, pop the buttercream into zip lock sandwich bags, snip off the corner, and voilà: instant no fuss piping bags.

Your Ingredients List

  • Epic Double Choc Brownie Mix: Everything you need in one bottle: flour, cocoa powder, golden caster sugar and chocolate chunks. Making these Christmas brownies rich, chocolatey and super easy.
  • Unsalted butter (melted): Adds richness and gives the brownies a fudgy texture.
  • Eggs: Provides structure, moisture and richness.
  • Salted butter: Gives the buttercream a creamy, rich flavour and whips up light and fluffy. Salted butter helps balance the overall sweetness of the brownies.
  • Icing sugar: Sweetens and thickens the buttercream for that classic fluffy texture.
  • Milk: Loosens the buttercream slightly, making it smooth and easy to pipe or spread.
  • Cocoa powder: Mixed with a splash of hot water to turn part of the buttercream chocolatey for the reindeer brownies.
  • Red & green food colouring: For the Christmas tree brownies and Santa hat brownies. Gel food colouring works best for mixing the brightest colour without affecting the consistency of the buttercream. I used Sugarflair Red Extra and Colour Splash Leaf Green.
  • Decorative bits and bobs: chocolate beans, candy canes, pretzels, edible eyes, mini marshmallows.

How To Make Easy Christmas Brownies

Step 1: Prep and Bake the Brownies

Right, apron on. Mix the Epic Double Choc Brownie Mix with melted butter and two eggs until smooth. Then spread into a lined 8-inch round baking tin and bake at 170°C fan until the top looks set (no wet mixture). 15-18 minutes is usually perfect, you want that lovely wobble in the middle, as the brownies will continue to firm up while cooling. Let the brownies cool at room temperature for 30 minutes, then pop them in the fridge for 2 hours to cool completely and set. Meanwhile, you can get the buttercream prepped.

Step 2: Mix Up The Buttercream

Once you’ve mixed up your plain buttercream, it’s time to make those colours pop! First, scoop out 3 tablespoons of white buttercream and set aside. Now, split the remaining buttercream evenly between three bowls. Mix cocoa powder and hot water into the first bowl for the chocolate buttercream. Add red food colouring to the second bowl and mix until the colour is even. Repeat with the final bowl of buttercream and green food colouring. Now let’s fill the piping bags:

  • For the Santa hat brownies: fit a piping bag with a round piping nozzle. Scoop the red buttercream inside. Scoop the white buttercream into a piping bag (no nozzle needed) and snip of the tip to make a 1cm hole.
  • For the Christmas Tree brownies: fit a piping bag with a closed star nozzle. Scoop the green buttercream inside.
  • For the Reindeer brownies: fit a piping bag with a petal nozzle. Scoop the chocolate buttercream inside.

No piping bags or nozzles? No probs! Either use a ziplock bag with the corner snipped off. Or just spread the buttercream on instead – easy peasy Christmas brownies in no time!

Step 3: Gather Your Decorations

You don’t need anything fancy, just a few cute decorations will bring each brownie character to life. For the Christmas tree brownies, you’ll want some colourful sprinkles or chocolate beans to dot over your green buttercream trees. The star sprinkle for the top of the tree looks super cute too! For the Santa hat brownies, grab mini marshmallows for the little bobbles and some white sprinkles or edible snow for the fluffy trim. And for the reindeer brownies, you’ll need pretzels for ears, edible eyes, and a blob of red buttercream for Rudolph’s nose. Lay everything out before you start piping and you’ll be decorating like an pro!

Step 4: Slice and Decorate Your Easy Christmas Brownies

Right, your brownie is baked, cooled, and ready for its festive glow up! First things first, slice it into 6 triangles. The easiest way is to cut the round brownie in half, then make two diagonal criss-cross cuts. Grab some candy canes, snap them in half and stick them into the sides of the brownies for little sticks. Now let’s decorate:

Christmas Tree Brownies 🎄

These are so cute and honestly the easiest to decorate. Starting from the round base, pipe blobs of green buttercream and pull the piping bag upward to create a tree-like effect. Then dot on your decorations like you’re hanging teeny-tiny baubles and finish by placing a star at the top.

Santa Hat Brownies 🎅🏼

Pipe blobs of white buttercream along the bottom edge for the fluffy trim. Scatter over some white sprinkles, edible snow or coconut for a bit of texture. Pipe a swirl of red buttercream in the middle, then add a blob of white buttercream at the top. Finish with a mini marshmallow for the Santa hat bobble!

Reindeer Brownies 🦌

Possibly the crowd favourite. Pipe a generous overlapping swirl of chocolate buttercream, starting from the base and moving towards to the point. Add two edible eyes so your little reindeer can see where it’s going, then press in two pretzel pieces at the top for ears. Lastly, finish with a bold Rudolph red nose (a blob of red buttercream or even a red M&M if you have one to hand).

And that’s it, your easy Christmas brownies are ready to steal the show. Enjoy!

Recipe FAQ’s

Where can I find the Epic Choc Brownie Mix?

In all Tesco Extra and Tesco Superstores, or online here.

Do I have to pipe the buttercream?

Not at all! If piping bags and nozzles aren’t your vibe or you’re baking with little ones, you can simply spread the buttercream on with a spoon or palette knife and add your decorations on top. It still looks festive and tastes exactly the same. Or, for a super easy middle ground, scoop the buttercreams into zip lock sandwich bags and snip off the corner to make a quick DIY piping bag without any of the faff.

Can I make my own brownies from scratch?

Absolutely! My fudgy brownie recipe would be perfect for this.

What food colouring is best to use for buttercream?

Gel food colouring is your best friend here. It gives you bold, vibrant colours (perfect for those Christmassy reds and greens!) without watering down the buttercream or making it split. I used Sugarflair Red Extra and Colour Splash Leaf Green.

Can I make these brownies ahead of time?

Absolutely! The brownies keep really well. You can bake them the day before, let them cool completely and decorate the next day. They stay fudgy for 3–4 days in an airtight container.

How do I store these Easy Christmas Brownies

Keep them in an airtight tin at room temperature for 4 days. You can also freeze them individually wrapped for up to 2 months. Defrost at room temperature before eating.
